The Problem With Making Money Online Was Me

The Problem With Making Money Online Was Me

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always dreamed of starting my own business and impacting people’s lives in a positive way, but I never knew how I’d actually go about doing it.

When I got my first job, what I was looking for was money in order to get my life started. But one year into it, I realized I didn’t enjoy being an employee much, so I began reading books on personal development and building wealth, just like everyone else who begins this journey. One of the books I came across was the “The 4-Hour Workweek” by Tim Ferris. That book did something special to me. Sure, Tim’s book has changed the lives of a lot of people who got his message, but that’s not what changed me. The book impacted me in a different, more personal way.

You see, my parents never believed it was a good idea to give money to kids because kids should not handle money until they were much older and responsible. Funny enough, I remained a kid in their eyes until the day I got a job. So when I got to that age where my peers were buying things they wanted on their own, without asking mom and dad, I got worried. “If the others find out I have to ask my parents for money everytime I need it, they’ll make fun of me!!!” There was no way I was going to be that guy.

I entered the business world back in 2003 when I was 14 years old selling pirated music CDs to other kids at school. My parents lived in the city and for my own security didn’t allow me to go play outside. I would either play inside the house or at school. So during all that time that I’d stay at home, I would browse the internet and download games, movies, music, software, and whatever else I wanted back then. When I discovered that not everyone had internet in their houses, nor computers, let alone CD-Writers which were very rare back then, I knew I had an advantage over everyone else.

When family and friends wanted a song they heard on TV, I was the go-to guy. Being the son of a hard-working man who managed to make it to middle‐class and take his family out of harsh poverty, I had luxuries like the internet that most people I knew did not.

Somehow I managed to get by over the years, but it was always a struggle. Now I see how awesome that experience was because I learned how to pay attention to my money all the time. And I mean all the time. I knew exactly how much money I had in my wallet, my drawer, my bank account, and how many people owed me at any given moment.  I was bookkeeping even before I knew what that word meant.

But over the years, people caught up and all of a sudden everyone had computers, and internet, and were making their own downloads. Somewhere around 2011, I could no longer continue with this business, so I had to replace this source of income. That’s when I turned to the internet and began looking for ways to make money online. I made money with paid surveys, article writing for websites, and Google Adsense, but I was making nothing to write home about. It was a lot of work to generate from $15 to $50 US dollars per month, so I quit when I got a real job in 2012.

Although I was not earning much as an employee, I was making more money than I had ever made before, so I dropped everything else and became a full-time employee. It took me a while to get out of the comfort zone and actually look for an alternative source of income and finally quit my job, and by then I had completely forgotten that there was a time when I made money online. Tim Ferris changed that for me.

When I read the”The 4-Hour Workweek“, where Tim explained how to leverage the internet to make money and build a real business, I believed him completely. It made perfect sense, I had been there but quit too soon. I also discovered that I quit when I was making $50 a month, when the great majority of people who try, quit without ever making a single dollar. I remembered that although it took too much effort to make little money, at least I knew the exact process which was really not that complicated. So when I found out that I had done something years earlier that not a lot of people managed to do, I knew I had an advantage over everyone else (again).

So in 2016 I went back online and tried to do the exact same thing I had done 5 years earlier. I failed miserably. The internet had changed completely. The things I used to do no longer worked. But then I discovered the shiny objects. I’d buy anything that promised me money quickly, and when it didn’t work, I’d switch to something else. I dabbled this way up until mid-2017 when I finally realized that I was paying attention to the wrong thing.

I realized that back in 2011, I just got lucky to find those sites that enabled me to make money. It wasn’t because I was smarter than everyone else. Now I couldn’t even make a single dollar. In mid-2017 I realized that instead of looking for a product that would solve my troubles, I should look for someone who was already making money online and discover how they were doing it.

That’s when I began looking for mentors and consuming their content. I suddenly shifted from reading product reviews, then buying and trying for a few days before asking for a refund if it didn’t work, to following the recommendations of those who were living the way that I wanted to live, and sticking to it until I had the same results.

Can you guess what this shift did for me? It changed everything. It changed how I make decisions, which changed how I behave, which changed how I spend my time and money, and this has changed my life. I finally realized that it wasn’t just about consuming the right information, I stumbled upon that more often than not. It was about sticking to something and making it work, it was about understanding what I was doing, and I could either learn on my own or get someone to teach me.

This realization made me shift from spending money on $27 dollar make money quickly programs, to invest thousands of dollars in courses and tools. I had never imaged I’d spend that kind of money online on courses and mentoring programs, but that’s precisely what I did.

Now I’m in an interesting stage in my life, and I feel compelled to share it with the world. Although it requires a lot more work and discipline than anything  I’ve ever done before, working has never been this much fun.
